Bamboo Progettazione

This exhibition unites ten Tainan bamboo craftspeople and ten international designers in a collaborative probe of bamboo as provisional construction. It prioritises process over product: design and making revisited through material dialogue.From Enzo Mari’s Autoprogettazione?, it suspends "do-it-yourself" individualism for dual authorship. Works arise from negotiation between designer concepts and craftsperson knowledge—of material behaviour, structural logic, improvisation. Design shifts from directive to method, tested and challenged by material reality.Progettazione endures as method, limit, judgement—adapted to bamboo's divergence from standardised timber. Though industrially viable, seasonal bamboo demands experiential mastery in processing, reading, and nuanced risk management. Hence, paired collaboration supplants universal autonomy, forged in sixty days of collaborative exchange.A "make-do" ethos embraces provisionality as strength, spotlighting material intelligence and contingency over permanence. Bamboo reemerges—not as nostalgic craft, but contemporary riposte to industrial assembly, temporal structures, modular systems.Spanning forests, workshops, gallery, Bamboo Progettazione? extends Mari’s questions into bamboo's ecology. It models design via cooperation, local expertise, non-extractive making—urging: at what depth in knowledge, skillset, and collaboration do we enable meaningful participation, choice making, and account for consumption's heaviness?
